Family History The Second Generation
Mary Hattie "Sis" John Henry Fleming
|
John Henry Fleming, the seventh child of Greene and Lucinda McDaniel Fleming, was the first child to be born after the family migrated from South Carolina to Arkansas. He was born in Center Ridge in the Abel Community. He married Clarentine Sullivan. They had eight children who are listed below. Their bond lasted throughout their life and down through five generations so far, including their belief in God. He was a minister throughout the Cypress Creek District which included most of Conway County. He set an awesome example for us. Even with only a fifth grade education which was pretty high in those days, he encouraged his children to continue their education, which they did by earning BA's, Masters and even Doctorates. One of his favorite sayings was (being only one generation from slavery) that he "never wanted his daughters working in white folk's kitchens." One of his wife's favorite sayings to her children was "Johnny would not agree with me on this, but you know right from wrong. If you know this in your heart, then you can go anywhere and still do right."
