Lucinda "Lula" or "Mitt" Fleming Smith is the third child of Greene Fleming and Lucinda McDaniel Fleming and is a member of the second generation of the family. Lula was born in Laurens County, South Carolina and was one of Greene and Lucinda's six children who journeyed with them to Mt. Abell near Center Ridge in Conway County, Arkansas. Lula taught school in the Greenbrier community in Faulkner County, Arkansas. While teaching in greenbrier, Lula met Edward Smith, a railroad worker, whom she married. The newly married couple moved to Morrilton, Arkansas where they lived until passing. Lula and Edward added six (6) members to the third generation of the Greene Fleming/Lucinda McDaniel Fleming Family -- Louise Smith Brame, James Edward Smith, Ruby Lee Smith, Gilliam Smith, Niles Smith Sr., and Dorothy Mae Smith Reid. Lula was a member of Union Baptist Church and was a dedicated worker in the church mission. Louise Smith Brame was the first child of Lula Fleming and Ed Smith and one of the early members of the third generation of the Fleming-McDaniel Family. Louise grew up in Morrilton, Arkansas and attended L.W. Sullivan School. Louise married Major Brame Sr. and they had two children, Major Jr., and Charles Brame. Louise lived in Chicago, Illinois for many years and returned to Morrilton, Arkansas to assist with and later to take care of her elderly parents. Louise had a phenomenal voice, which she shared by singing in the Union Baptist Church choir and the Middle Western District Congress Chorus as well as at other functions. Louise was a great cook and the entire Fleming-McDaniel family looked forward to her peach cobbler at reunions. Louise had a twinkle in her eye and a smile on her face almost always. Louise passed in February of 2000. To her children and grandchildren she was "Mudese." To all of us she was a unique person who loved and cared for her parents and family. Dorothy Mae Smith Reid is the sixth child of Ed and Lula Fleming Smith and a member of the third generation of the Fleming-McDaniel Family. Dorothy finished L.W. Sullivan High School in Morrilton and attended Arkansas Mechanical and Normal College (AM&N) in Pine Bluff, AR (now UAPB). Dorothy married Melvin Lee Reid and moved to New York, New York. Dorothy and Melvin adopted a son, Bernard, who is a member of the fourth generation of the Fleming McDaniel Family. Dorothy was a nurse's aid and worked in New York and in Morrilton, Arkansas. She was on the staff at St. Anthony's Hospital until she became ill. Dorothy passed in 1970. Dorothy was a member of Union Baptist Church while living in Morrilton, Arkansas--growing up and upon her return. Bernard Reid, a member of the fourth generation of the Fleming-McDaniel Family graduated from Morrilton High School in 1971 and attended the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas for two years. Bernard returned to New York to live with his adopted father, Melvin Reid, and stayed until he enlisted in the Navy. Bernard was in the Navy from 1974 until 1978. After his stint with the Navy, Bernard went to school at the Electronic Computer Programming Institute (ECPI) in Virginia. During his last year at school, IBM conducted interviews on ECPI's campus and Bernard obtained his first job. Upon graduation Bernard moved to Boca Raton, Florida to assume his new position. He remained with IBM for ten years. Today in the year 2000 Bernard is the purchasing agent for the MASTEC Network Service Company. In 1995, after an extensive search Bernard found his biological mother, which gave him great joy. Today he says that he is blessed to have two families who really love him. To the fifth generation of the Fleming-McDaniel Family, Bernard added one daughter, Keshia. Keshia has a great love for horses and has been riding since she was seven years old. She rides competitively as a hunter-jumper. Keshia has competed in both riding and jumping events and has won 21 ribbons and five trophies. Keshia wants to finish high school, go to college and study veterinary medicine and become a veterinarian. |
